Inner Tribe Work: Shamanism For IFS Therapists

Soul Loss, Soul Retrieval, & Internal Family Systems

IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy, developed by the psychologist Richard Schwartz, understands that we are made up of a collection of inner parts−of-self, an “inner tribe” if you like. This is natural to us and healthy.

However, this inner tribe can become out of balance, with some wounded parts of us acting out unhelpful strategies in an attempt to protect us, whilst other parts of us (our playfulness, joy, tenderness, assertiveness and so on) can become marginalised and lost. 

IFS seeks to restore balance by healing the wounded parts, returning the parts that have been exiled, and, most importantly, establishing a connection with the healthy “Self”. IFS understands healthy Self as something that (1) is in everyone (2) cannot itself be damaged (3) knows how to help and heal the other parts of us.

Shamanism as the Original “Parts-Of-Self” Model

IFS has grown enormously in popularity in recent years, which is testimony to its great effectiveness. 

It is itself though one of a number of psychotherapies that recognise that our inner life is made up of parts. These include: Voice Dialogue work, founded by Hal Stone; John Rowan’s work on sub-personalities; Transactional Analysis: constellations of the self, a development of Burt Hellingers’s Family Constellation work; Gestalt chair work, where different parts of self are separated out onto different “chairs” in order to facilitate dialogue between them: and many other approaches. In fact, even going back to the origins of psychotherapy, Freud recognised that we are made up of three main parts of self, that he named the id, the ego and the super-ego. 

For further context, psychotherapy itself is a little over a hundred years old, whereas shamanism is thousands of years old, probably tens of thousands of years old. Shamanism itself is a part of animism, our oldest form of spirituality. Animism is not a religion, but a way of being. The author and academic Graham Harvey described animists as “people who recognise that the world is full of persons, only some of whom are human, and that life is always lived in relationship to others. Animism is lived out in various ways that are all about learning to act respectfully (carefully and constructively) towards and among other persons”. 

Until comparatively recently in human history, all humans lived as hunter-gatherers. In fact, around 95% of the generations of our ancestors lived as hunter-gatherers. As far as we know, all hunter-gathers were animists, people who lived in respectful and reciprocal right-relationship with the other-than-human beings they shared their world with. In addition to experiencing the world in an animist way, shamans were people who could also enter an altered state of consciousness in which they could travel the “shamanic realms”, through what is known as a “shamanic journey”. In doing so, they could access healing and wisdom in order to be of service to their tribe and community.

Exiles, Soul Loss and shamanic soul retrieval

What IFS refers to as exiles are, in shamanism, often lost soul parts. A key aspect of shamanism is what is known as soul retrieval. For tens of thousands of years, shamans have understood that we are made up of parts of self. Through traumas and other life events, some of these parts can leave and become lost. In shamanism, this is known in as “soul loss” [you can read more about soul loss and its causes and symptoms in or blog here]. Soul loss leaves us in a weakened state, so a key component of shamanism is the practice of “soul retrieval”. This involves a shaman entering into a shamanic journey on behalf of someone suffering from soul loss, finding their missing soul part, dialoguing with it, offering it healing, and then helping it to return and take its rightful place back in the person’s inner tribe.

These days we live in an epidemic of rising mental health issues. It is too big a topic to go into detail here (we will address it in detail on the course however), by contrast, our hunter-gatherer, animist ancestors tended to be emotionally, psychologically and spiritually healthier than us. Nevertheless, like us, our ancestors still on occasion suffered soul loss from a number of causes, such as bereavements, shocks and near-death experiences, illnesses and more. In shamanic cultures, when soul loss occurred, it was understood, the symptoms recognised, and it was swiftly dealt with.

By contrast, these days not only does soul loss usually go unrecognised and untreated, but the causes of it have also increased too.

This is, of course understood in modern-day psychotherapies like IFS, where it is known that protector parts (managers and fire-fighters in IFS) can be ambivalent about lost parts (exiles) returning, hence the need for negotiation between the parts (ideally facilitated by the Self energy).

Without doing this, soul retrievals can often be only partially effective or not lasting, as without having their concerns addressed, the protector parts send the returned soul part away again.

Does this mean that modern-day psychotherapies like IFS have made shamanic soul retrieval redundant?

Absolutely not! Although IFS and related therapies are brilliant at understanding the process of facilitating parts-of-self and establishing a healthy inner tribe – knowledge that is essential in the modern era − they still fall far short when it comes to understanding soul loss.

Shamanism, by contrast, has, over thousands upon thousands of years, accrued a vast body of knowledge and practices for dealing with soul loss.

Shamanism is also very pragmatic. What shamans have always done is take the ancient core principles, practices and wisdom of shamanism (sometimes referred to as core shamanism) and adapt these to the times and environment they lived in. We need to do the same. 

Shamanism and psychotherapy clearly have areas where they overlap. They are also quite different in other ways too. As such, each has much it can teach the other, and each has much it can learn from the other too.

Hence Therapeutic Shamanism – the approach we teach at this college.

Explore the rich history of shamanism and animism, and how this indigenous knowledge was central to our ancestors’ lives. Dive into practical techniques of shamanic journeying and Power Animal retrieval, fostering deep connections with nature. Delve into Therapeutic Shamanism, bridging ancient wisdom with modern psychotherapy. Learn ethical shamanic practices and the basics of how to do simple shamanic healing for other people (including not just humans, but pets and other animals too).

This includes identifying soul loss, finding lost soul parts, returning them, and traditional integration techniques. As well as more straight-forward soul retrievals, we will explore other practices such as: “singing the souls back home”; how to retrieve lost soul parts from the shamanic middle-world (and so, how to do middle-world journeys, including looking at issues such as safety and protection); what to do when soul parts have gone into the Land of the Dead, complications that can arise from ancestral issues; and the important issue of how to heal lost soul parts before returning them (and how to do that).

We will look at how to negotiate with protector, exiled and lost parts, to ensure that soul retrieval is successful. In doing so we will use the IFS parts-of-self model and explore how shamanism fits into this, whilst also looking at how the shamanic understanding can greatly expand and deepen the IFS model too.

We will look at the IFS concept of Self from a shamanic perspective. Shamanism draws crucial distinctions between Self, Spirit and Soul. From a shamanic perspective, the IFS concept of Self is a mixture of aspects of Self and Spirit, but Soul (as understood in shamanism) is still lacking. We will explore this in detail, again seeing how the shamanic knowledge can greatly expand and deepen the IFS work [you can read more about Soul and its crucial place in shamanism, here].

More recently, there has been a growing interest in IFS about “unattached burdens” – parts that are not of self, but “other”. This is great to see, and at the same time, shamanism has a vast amount of experience and wisdom it can bring to this. So we will explore issues such as how to distinguish between parts-of-self and parts that are not self, and the complex issue of what “other-than-self” parts are and how to deal with them.

Also in IFS has been a growing awareness of “ancestral burdens” – things that get passed down the generations and which we carry until and unless we deal with them. Alongside soul retrieval, dealing with ancestral issues is one of the cornerstones of shamanic work, and there is a rich tradition of practices and wisdom we can explore here to deepen IFS work.

Shamans distinguish between soul loss and Power loss. Power loss in shamanism is not the same as what may in psychotherapy be understood as the loss of personal power, but something far deeper and wide-ranging in its effects. Whilst the symptoms of soul loss and power loss can be almost identical, their causes and the treatments needed are quite different [you can read more about power loss in our blog here]. On the course, we will look at this – another way in which shamanism can greatly add to the effectiveness of IFS work.

There are a number of reasons for this, the main one being that our First-Steps course contains a lot of essential information that is unique to this approach and cannot be found on other shamanic trainings.

However, our next First-Steps course doesn’t start till June 9th, the day after the IFS and Shamanism course starts. Consequently, as a one-off, we are going to let people do the IFS and Shamanism course and the First-Steps course, side-by-side, and offer the First-Steps at a 50% discount for any IFS practitioners or students who want to do this, reducing the cost of the First-Steps course from £80 to just £40, just £40 for around 20 hours of teaching.

practical DETAILS

As a college we are committed to keeping our courses as low-cost as we possibly can. This makes them much less expensive than almost any other comparable courses, in terms of what you get for your money, making the cost of this combined course just £340.

The Inner Tribe course starts on June 8th, 2024 and consists of:

  • A minimum of 12 pre-recorded video presentations, with accompanying learning resources. Each presentation is between 1 to 3 hours in length (2 hours on average), providing over 24 hours of teaching material in total. The video recordings will be released on or around June 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6 and 13. Then there is a six-week gap before the sessions start again on August 24, 31, September 7, 14, 21, and 28.

  • 8 live experiential and community-orientated sessions. These are on Saturdays, are 2 hours long, and start at 2pm (UK time). Recordings of these will be available (minus the break-out room discussions, for reasons of privacy) for anyone who cannot attend live. The live sessions are at 2 pm (UK time), on June 15, 22, July 6 and 13, and then a six-week gap before they resume on August 24, September 7, 14, and 28.

  • Lecture notes and other handouts, and extensive suggestions of other resources for additional research, will be provided.

  • A website forum and (an optional) Signal group, where students can ask questions, discuss topics, share experiences and additional resources, and get support, encouragement, and a sense of community.

  • Bonus recordings as needed.

I am a shamanic practitioner, teacher, writer, founder of Therapeutic Shamanism, and of the Three Ravens College of Therapeutic Shamanism and Animism. As well as drawing on my experience in shamanism and animism, my teaching and writing is heavily influenced by my psychotherapy background too.

From a shamanic perspective, the IFS concept of Self is a mixture of aspects of Self and Spirit, but Soul (as understood in shamanism) is still lacking. We will explore this in detail, again seeing how the shamanic knowledge can greatly expand and deepen the IFS work [you can read more about Soul and its crucial place in shamanism, here].
  • Part of Self, or not part of self? More recently, there has been a growing interest in IFS about “unattached burdens” – parts that are not of self, but “other”. This is great to see, and at the same time, shamanism has a vast amount of experience and wisdom it can bring to this. So we will explore issues such as how to distinguish between parts-of-self and parts that are not self, and the complex issue of what “other-than-self” parts are and how to deal with them.
  • Ancestral issues. Also in IFS has been a growing awareness of “ancestral burdens” – things that get passed down the generations and which we carry until and unless we deal with them. Alongside soul retrieval, dealing with ancestral issues is one of the cornerstones of shamanic work, and there is a rich tradition of practices and wisdom we can explore here to deepen IFS work.
  • Soul loss or Power loss? Shamans distinguish between soul loss and Power loss. Power loss in shamanism is not the same as what may in psychotherapy be understood as the loss of personal power, but something far deeper and wide-ranging in its effects. Whilst the symptoms of soul loss and power loss can be almost identical, their causes and the treatments needed are quite different [you can read more about power loss in our blog here]. On the course, we will look at this – another way in which shamanism can greatly add to the effectiveness of IFS work.

This includes identifying soul loss, finding lost soul parts, returning them, and traditional integration techniques. As well as more straight-forward soul retrievals, we will explore other practices such as: “singing the souls back home”; how to retrieve lost soul parts from the shamanic middle-world (and so, how to do middle-world journeys, including looking at issues such as safety and protection); what to do when soul parts have gone into the Land of the Dead, complications that can arise from ancestral issues; and the important issue of how to heal lost soul parts before returning them (and how to do that).
